As the season is nearing a close, it’s time for Tour pros to set their sights on the final Major of the year, The British Open, more commonly referred to as The Open Championship. The Open Championship is regarded as golf’s oldest tournament and is exclusively played on links-style courses, which offers PGA Tour pros a wealth of challenges. Many players are trying to secure their very first Major, while some are aiming to close out their Career Grand Slam. With all the prestige that comes with winning the British Open, there’s also a very sizable purse that awaits this year’s field.
The purse at the 2023 British Open
The purse at this year’s British Open is a record-setting $16.5 million. This isn’t the largest pot we’ve seen at a Major, but it’s certainly still enough to help motivate players to pursue the Claret Jug. For additional context, this year’s prize money comes in at 18% lower than the payout at the 2023 U.S. Open. Similarly, when looking at the 2023 PGA Championship we see that this year’s purse is 11% lower but almost double the amount at the Genesis Scottish Open. This winner and Champion Golfer of the year was Brian Harman. With his win, Harman earns a very handsome $3 million. This is the most money paid out at The Open in its history.
How much does the winning caddie make at the Open Championship?
This winning caddie at this year’s Open Championship, was Scott Tway. With this win, Tway will get to take home a historic payday, $300,000. Though this is the standard 10% we know caddies earn for being on the winning bag on Tour, it’s over double the amount Harry Diamond took home for winning at the Genesis Scottish Open alongside Rory McIlroy.
How much do caddies make at the 2023 British Open?
With over $1 million in prize money for caddies that made the cut over the weekend, each caddie is sure to be working extra hard to ensure that they get a decent portion of the pot. Caddie payouts will be a mystery for now we’ve got you covered. We’ll use our traditional payout projection model to see how much caddies could be making, depending on where they finish over the weekend. The Model: the 5% for placing outside the top 10, 7% for placing inside the top 10, and 10% for winning.
